RLM Web Server Users and Passwords

Abstract

RLM Server administrators can create user accounts to access the RLM Web Server. The method of user management has changed between RLM versions. This article will go over the different methods used with specific RLM versions.

v16.0+

Since RLM v16.0, all user management is handled in browser via the Web Interface. During initial setup you will be required to set a unique password for the “admin” user.

Once the admin user has been setup, users with admin permissions will be able to create additional users.

  • Navigate to Settings

  • Enter the username and role for the new user

  • A one time use setup password for the user will be created, and can be provided to the new user so they can log in

We recommend creating a least one additional admin user so that administrators can reset each other's passwords if needed.

v10.0 - v15.2

In RLM versions 10.0 to 15.2 access control to the RLM web interface was handled by creating a user access file rlm.pw Administrators would add users one line at a time specifying: username, password, and user permissions.

username:password:list-of-permissions

If the password value was blank, a user could log in without a password and then set up their own password in the web interface.

Password checking and logic changed over the RLM versions, here are some of the high level changes:

  • Starting in RLM v12.4 if there is no password file present, the edit options and edit rlm options commands are disabled.
  • Starting in RLM v14.2 if there are any users in the rlm.pw file with blank password, the RLM server would shut down after 10 minutes.
  • Starting with RLM 15.1 if there wasn’t an rlm.pw file present at server start, a rlm.pw file would automatically be generated.

Note: RLM 15.2 used a different password encryption protocol than earlier RLM versions. As such earlier rlm.pw files are incompatible with 15.2, and vise versa.
